چکیده

Theory: Contemporary theories of presidential election outcomes, especially the economic voting and spatial issue voting models, are used to examine voter choice in the 1996 presidential election. Hypotheses: First, we look at the e ects of voter perceptions of the national economy on voter support for Clinton. Second we look at the e ects of candidate and voter positions on ideology and on a number of issues. Last, we examine whether respondents' views on other issues | social issues such as abortion as well as issues revolving around entitlements and taxation that were emphasized by the campaigns | played signi cant roles in this election. Methods: Multinomial probit analysis of the 1996 National Election Studies data; simulations based on counterfactual scenarios based on di erent macroeconomic conditions and di erent issue platforms of candidates. Results: The e ects of economic perceptions are much greater than the e ects of voter issue positions on the election outcome. Some social issues, namely abortion, did play a role in determining the election outcome. The presence of a third centrist candidate limited the ability of other candidates to improve their vote shares by moving in the issue space. In this paper we critique much of the empirical literature on the important political science concept of presidential approval. Much of the recent research on presidential approval has focused on the dynamic nature of approval; arguments have raged about whether presidential approval is integrated, co-integrated, or fractionally integrated. We argue that none of these time-series concepts, impo...

Theory: We present a model of voter campaign learning which is based on Bayesian learning models. This model assumes voters are imperfectly informed and that they incorporate new information into their existing perceptions about candidate issue positions in a systematic manner. Hypothesis: Additional information made available to voters about candidate issue positions during the course of a pol...

This paper implements a unified model of individual abstention and vote choice to analyze policy-based alienation and indifference in Brazil’s 2002 presidential election. The results indicate that both alienation and indifference depressed turnout, with indifference contributing slightly more to voter abstention. Also, the determinants of alienation and indifference differed considerably, the f...

Division of the Humanities and Social Sciences California Institute of Technology Pasadena, California 91125 Attack Politics: Who Goes Negative and Why?

I introduce a formal model of campaign strategy to show when candidates will engage in negative campaigning and how it can affect election results. The model separates campaign strategies by target (self or opponent) and dimension (issue or character), and defines negative campaigning as attacking one’s opponent on the character dimension. Whether candidates choose negative campaigning depends ...
